Best of Philly 2008: Custom-Made Shirts

Barton & Donaldson

1635 Chancellor Street
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19103

Sigh. Men these days. In better times, there were Bogie and Cary Grant and Dean Martin, in tuxes. Today, women get besneakered rappers as the kings of cool, and shirtless Texans as sex symbols. If it weren’t for Clooney, we’d just give up. Well, Clooney and Don Donaldson, whose Center City shop still turns out beautiful custom-made dress shirts for men. That Donaldson has continued to find new devotees after 40 years in business gives us hope that men are realizing how far a little old-fashioned quality goes toward sexy. (See: Cary Grant.) And, guys, ask any of the shop’s clients: Nothing beats the feeling of wearing something that was literally made to fit you — to say nothing of the way you look. (Dapper!)
