The roll is the key. At White House Sub Shop, a landmark going strong since 1946, Formica Brothers supplied the crusty rolls into which a blend of sliced meats, onions and oil are layered in a fine amalgamation of textures and flavors, creating the consummate hoagie. Several years ago, Formica was ousted, and now Rando does the baking — but these hoagies are still the reference standard.
