Giveaway: What’s Your Big Health Idea?

There’s lots to love about Philadelphia—Fairmount Park and the Schuylkill River Trail, our world-class museums and vibrant dining scene. But just like any other city, there’s always room for improvement.

This week on Be Well Philly, we want to hear your big ideas for how to make the Philadelphia region a happier, healthier place to live. Maybe you have an idea for how to get kids to eat healthier foods, or a way to curb our city’s (icky) smoking habit. Maybe you know of a great health or fitness initiative in another city that Philly should adopt. The sky’s the limit here, so think outside the box—think big.

Be Well Giveaway: How Much Water Do You Drink?

With the Broad Street Run less than a week away and the weather man predicting bright, sunny skies (yay!), I’m in full-on hydration mode. This week, I’m keeping a tally of how many times I fill my water bottle at work. My daily goal: four refills. To be honest, this amounts to approximately 400 percent more water than I usually drink. My plan is to flood myself with water until race day.

This month over on our Be Well Philly Facebook page, we’re asking readers about their water-guzzling habits. It’s our monthly Average Philadelphian poll question, the results of which will be published in an upcoming issue of Philly Mag. But this month, we’re giving you another incentive to weigh in: We’ve teamed up with the awesome folks over at Hydros to offer a prize to one lucky poll-taker! The winner, selected at random, will get a Hydros self-filtering water bottle. For the record, I own one of these bottles and, yes, they are awesome. The 16-ounce, BPA-free bottles can filter plain ol’ tap water (from the gym’s water fountain, perhaps?) in less than 30 seconds, so there’s no waiting around while you watch your water drip, drip, drip. And the filter removes chlorine, chloramine and particulates. Neat, right?

Head over to our Facebook page to answer the poll question. Post your answer by Friday, May 11th at 5 p.m. to be entered in the giveaway!

BWP Giveaway: Win a SodaStream Seltzer Maker!

Leave a comment on BWP's Facebook page for a chance to win your very own SodaStream!

Whether its served straight up or with a twist of lemon or a dash of juice, I simply cannot get enough seltzer. I love the way the bubbles feel on my tongue, and I adore the fact that it doesn’t have a speck of sugar or artificial sweetener. For the past five years or so, my love for the bubbly beverage has been evident in the numerous cans and plastic bottles in my recycling bin. While I knew it wasn’t great for the environment, it kept me from drinking unhealthy diet soda. However, once I moved in with my boyfriend a few months ago, he stopped buying diet soda and began sharing my seltzer. While I was thrilled he wasn’t filling his body with chemicals, the number of bottles and cans in our recycling skyrocketed. We were also spending much more than anyone ever should on H20, even if it did have bubbles. Read more »

BWP Giveaway: Win a SpinGym!

Win a SpinGym and have tighter arms by summer!

You may have heard of the SpinGym a few years ago, when its creator, actress-turned-exercise-maven Forbes Riley, launched the arm-shaping, yo-yo-esque device on the Discovery series PitchMen in 2009. I, however, hadn’t heard of the celebrity-endorsed flab-fighter (Tori Spelling, William Shatner and cast members of Glee have been reported to use it), and after seeing an ad for it in the upper corner of our Be Well Philly Facebook page, I quickly decided I needed to give it a test run—and to give one away to a BWP reader!  After all, summer is only a few months away, and if there’s anything I could do to help all of us arrive at tank-top season feeling even a twinge more confident about our arms, I’m all for it. (Find out how to enter for your chance to win a SpinGym at the end of this post!) Read more »

Be Well Giveaway: Win 360 Cookware!

Win this 360 Cookware pot!

Another great giveaway is up for grabs, Be Wellers! Just in time for holiday cooking and New Year’s resolutions,  360 Cookware is giving away stainless-steel 1-quart saucepans ($129.95 value) to three lucky Be Well readers! The pans, which you can find online and at Vir Tú medi-spa in Sewell, New Jersey, use “vapor technology,”  a cooking method that creates a low, intense heat that cooks food evenly from all sides.  This allow you to cook foods faster, with less energy, and without oil, butter, or—get this—hardly any water.  This little-to-no-water method means less nutrients escape from your food into the water, veggies don’t get soggy, the true flavor of the food stands out, and you save time, energy, and money. Not a bad combo, right? You can see exactly how the pans work in the video below, or stop by Vir Tú for a live demo. Read more »
