Springtime finally seems to have shown up, and we couldn’t be happier here in Be Well Philly Land. Below, 12 reasons we are so (so, so, SO) excited for warm weather in Philly. Read up, then start planning your delightful 70-degrees-and-sunny Saturday.
1. Picnics ALL the freakin’ time
Everything tastes better when you’re eating it on a checkered blanket under the sun, am I right? And with the weather finally warming up, it looks like we’ll be able to do a whole lot of lazing around Philly lawns soon enough. 2. Long bike rides along the Schuylkill River Trail
Fact: There is no better way to spend a Saturday in spring than pedaling along the SRT. And this spring, with the addition of Sullivan’s Bridge, you can pedal your way all the way from the city across to Valley Forge. But before you head out, take note of these seven rules we wish everyone would follow on the Schuylkill River Trail. (We can hope, right?)
3. Bike commutes that don’t blow
I mean … need we say more? (This is a small window, because once summer’s humidity sets in, they will blow once again. But for now, let’s embrace it!)
4. Greenery-filled hikes
Sure, you can hike anytime of year. But now is when those glorious views of green on green on green return. Insert ALL the praise-hands emoji here. 5. Running the Wissahickon
The brave run the Wissahickon with running group Chasing Trail year round — through the snow, even! — but we, sorry to admit it, are not that brave. So we can’t wait to pound through the trails with sun beating down on us. If you’ve taken a seasonal break, too, we’ve got five sweet running routes through the Wissahickon to get you going again.
6. So. Much. Outdoor. Yoga
I never cease to be amazed by the long-as-a-CVS-receipt list of outdoor yoga options that pop up around Philly once tank top-season rolls around. There’s the always reliable Yoga on the Pier at Race Street Pier, of course and Yoga on the Banks, plus so much more. (And a little birdie tells us Be Well Philly may even have a surprise in store for you this warm-weather season. Stay tuned!)
7. Shaded bike rides along the closed-to-traffic MLK Drive
One of my favorite things about biking MLK Drive during the warmer months (aside from having four full car lanes to pedal down; it’s closed to traffic on weekends during the warmer months), is that you get the best of both worlds: warmth along with shade, thanks to the hefty tree canopy.
8. Working out on the water
You don’t have to head down the Shore for a water workout, my friends. Aqua Vida’s SUP fitness returns to Spruce Street Harbor Park this month (opening weekend for the park is this weekend!). And trust us: The ab burn you’ll get from balancing on a paddleboard is totally worth conquering your fear of falling into the Delaware for.
9. Fresh produce galore!
Who needs a 37-degree grocery store (WHY ARE GROCERY STORES ALWAYS SO COLD?!) when you can get your weekly shopping in at one of the many outdoor farmers’ markets around town? No one. The answer is no one.
10. Adult summer camps (really!)
Summer camps for adults have officially become a thing around Philly — and WHO doesn’t want to abandon responsibility and zip line their weekend away? (With bonfire-side drinks afterward — because we ARE adults, after all.)
11. Day escapes to the Shore
Who doesn’t love busting out of the city for a quickie day trip to the Shore? (Unless it’s a Saturday morning in summer. Do NOT try this on a Saturday morning in summer, my friends. It will NOT be a quick trip.) We suggest getting a sandy run in along one of these routes while you’re there. Then treat yourself to some boardwalk ice cream — you’ve earned it.
12. Be Well Philly Boot Camp!
We can’t talk about all the reasons we’re excited for warm weather in Philly and not mention our favorite day of the year. That would be Be Well Philly Boot Camp, of course. This year’s big day for our annual wellness fest for women — which includes everything from tons of fitness classes with the region’s best instructors to cooking demos to speaker sessions — is Saturday, June 3rd. So if you haven’t snagged your ticket, you’ll want to do that ASAP.
