My house is about 800 square feet and I bring this up because, when City Fitness’s marketing director Tom Wingert told me that the gym plans to open a 40,000-square-foot location at the corner of 18th Street and JKF Boulevard, I immediately imagined a space big enough to fit 50 of my homes inside of. To give you some perspective — you know, aside from my house — City Fitness’s current largest location, their Graduate Hospital gym, is 21,000 square feet and their new two-floor Fishtown location will be 22,000 square feet. So yeah, this Center City location will be huge.

The Center City City Fitness, which will take over the second floor of the Sterling building at 1815 JFK Boulevard, right across from the Comcast Center, will be the sixth location for the gym; Right now they have four locations across the city, with a fifth location slated to open in Fishtown in December. They signed the lease on the Center City space, which used to house offices, in July. The  goal is to have the space transformed from cubicle-packed office space to shiny new gym with doors open by late 2017 or early 2018.

Wingert tells us the Center City location will cater to the busy schedules of the many office workers in the area by setting aside plenty of space for studio classrooms to host a packed schedule of group training classes and by dedicating a generous 4,000 square feet to their functional training program. Then, of course, they’ll have your typical gym machines and weights. The new space will also feature executive locker rooms (ooh la la) and will have room for retail components. Wingert says they don’t know what those retail components will look like quite yet, but — similar to their Fishtown studio, which will feature a Stripp’d Juice location — they’ll certainly have plenty of room to work in food and fitness apparel partners.

And this beast of a sixth location will not be the last for City Fitness. Wingert says they plan on continuing their expansion and, while he didn’t tell us where exactly, he did say we can expect to hear about even more locations for City Fitness soon. Stay tuned, gym rats!
