Just over a year ago, in March of 2015, Duross & Langel, known for their handcrafted soaps, lotions, scrubs (the salt and pepper body scrub: OH my GOSH), opened a yoga studio next to their Midtown Village shop. It was an unexpected move, and one that a year later seems to have not quite worked: Yesterday, Steve Duross posted a touching blog post announcing that the Studio at Duross & Langel would be shuttering its doors come June 4th.

As he explains in the post, the space the studio existed in was originally intended to be an expansion of the company’s production studio, where they handcraft the concoctions sold in their shop. But, Duross says, “I thought this beautiful space would be better utilized for a broader purpose … an experiment in creating a local small business as something greater than the bottom line.” He goes on to say, “Eighteen months later … things change.”

Sarah Evancho, a crucial member of the Duross & Langel team — Duross calls her “The & in Duross & Langel) — and (conveniently) a yoga instructor, was running the studio, but as Duross says, “ … truth be told, Sarah never wanted to run a yoga studio. She wanted to continue running the store.” So that’s the end of the Studio at Duross and Langel. Going forward, the space will become what it was originally intended to be: an expanded production studio.
