9 Philly Fitness Classes With Names So Good You’ll Actually Want to Go
I spend an abnormally large part of my life looking at fitness studios’ schedules online. It is, after all, part of my job. And I’ve noticed that the classes that stand out to me, that I end up mentally sticky-noting with “MUST try,” are the ones that have funny or weird — but always different — names. A good name just does something for me that “45-Minute Spin” doesn’t, you know?
So that said, below you’ll find nine fitness classes around Philly that have great names. I’m guessing you’ll want to sign up for a few, too — because who can resist a fitness class with “Bey” — as in Queen Bey — in the name? No one. The answer is no one.
Where: Lithe Method, multiple locations
With names like Higher Power, Skinny Jeans, and more, it’s not easy to choose just one brilliantly named class from the roster at Cardio-Cheer Sculpting spot Lithe Method. But this class, which will legitimately cause you to beg for mercy, takes the cake, because it is both accurate and hilarious.
What: Iron Maiden Futurism
Where: Palo Santo Wellness Boutique, 1707 East Passyunk Avenue, South Philly
This class is a yoga/calisthenics hybrid. Think: downward dogs paired with burpees. Sounds crazy, I know — which makes the equally crazy name oh-so-fitting. (Philly Mag’s Ticket editor Josh Middleton is a devotee to this class; you can see all the nice things he has to say about it here.)
What: The EXPLICIT BCS Ride
Where: Body Cycle Studio, 1923 Chestnut Street, Rittenhouse
This weekly 45-minute ride, which recently became a regular on the schedule, is held to a playlist of uncensored — and sometimes explicitly dirty (I’m looking at you, Biggie Smalls) — hip-hop. Yes, it is as amazing as it sounds.
What: Butts and Guts
Where: Never Give Up Training, 4368 Cresson Street, Manayunk
If your abs and booty are your biggest trouble spots (I’m with you), this hilariously — and accurately! — named class is calling your name. It whips your butt and guts into shape, focusing on the abs, obliques, glutes, legs and thighs with plyometrics and strength work.
What: Naughty Bits
Where: Ploome Fitness and Lifestyle Boutique, 1040 North American Street, Northern Liberties
This class is all about getting your — you guessed it! — naughty bits, more maturely known as your pelvic floor, in tip-top shape. The class is particularly awesome for soon-to-be moms and new moms.
What: Weekend Warrior
Where: Grace & Glory Yoga Fishtown, 2200 Frankford Avenue, Fishtown
If you are getting to a heated power-yoga class at 9:30 a.m. on a Saturday or Sunday morning, you, my friend, are indeed a weekend warrior. And this class name is like a gentle pat on the back, because you deserve it.
What: Bey Body Intervals
Where: Allongée Technique, 68 North 2nd Street, Old City
Yep, that’s Bey as in Beyoncé. In this class, you’ll get your sweat on while listening to Beyoncé, and Beyoncé only. And, as I said above, who can resist a fitness class with “Bey” in the name? (You already know the answer.)
What: H.I.I.T. It Hard
Where: Relentless Fitness, 722 Chestnut Street, Washington Square West
What can I say? I love me a good pun. This class combines high-intensity cardio with strength moves for a very, very sweaty workout.
