Yesterday we gave you some pretty solid tips on how to pick the best gym or fitness studio for your goals. So now that you’ve found the right gym for you, you may be ready to sign on the dotted line. Er, not so fast.

Before you ink a contract, watch the video below for tips on how to save money on your fees and how to score some pretty sweet freebies. You may not be able to employ every trick in the book, but I can say from experience that being assertive and asking for exactly what you want (including discounts) never hurts.

Example: A few years back, when I lived in Washington, D.C., a friend told me he’d never once paid an initiation fee at a gym because, well, he simply, flatly refused to pay one. Since then, I’ve joined three different gyms and—guess what?—at each one, I’ve been able to get the initiation fee waived, simply because I asked. You don’t have to be a jerk about it, of course, and in my experience, you really don’t have to play hardball. You simply ask, and most of the time (or in my case, all of the time) they’re happy to accommodate.

Six more gym-contract tips are below. (Or watch the video here.)
