10 Coolest Fitness and Foodie Events in Philly This Month: November 2014

From ice skating to hip-hop dance to beer and yoga, here’s how we’re marking our calendar this month. Join us, won’t you?

1. Blue Cross RiverRink Winterfest
What: The Delaware River Waterfront’s outdoor Olympic-size ice skating rink opens for the winter season. This year’s setup will include a winter garden and forest made of hundreds of holiday trees and shrubs, rustic furniture, market lights and fire pits, as well as the Lodge, a newly revamped indoor space consisting of two ski chalet-style heated tents with comfy couches, indoor fireplaces and a wraparound porch complete with rockers and heat lamps.
Where: Penn’s Landing, 101 South Columbus Boulevard, Philadelphia.
When: Opens November 28th and will remain open until March 1st.

2. Justin Timberlake Hip-Hop Workshop
What: Ninety minutes of J.T. awesomeness with Philly Dance Fitness. You’ll learn smooth hip-hop moves—think slides, shoulder shrugs and spins—to Justin Timberlake’s very best hits. It’s $20 through November 9th and $25 after.
Where: 1170 South Broad Street, South Philly.
When: Sunday, November 16th from 3:30 to 5 p.m.

3. On-the-Water Learn to Row
What: Get out of the studio and on to the water with this outdoor rowing class with Rowzone Manayunk. It’s $40 to participate; no rowing experience necessary. Email rowzonemyk@gmail.com to sign up.

When: Saturday, November 22nd from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

4. Happy Hour Yoga with Joe Sixpack
What: Get your yoga on then sample seasonal beers (with expert guidance, of course) at this always-popular workshop at Yoga on the Ridge. This month, you’ll sample several Christmas beers, just in time for the holidays. It’s $25 to register.
Where: 493 Domino Lane, Roxborough.
When: Friday, November 21st at 6:30 p.m.

5. The Lemon Run
What: A 5K to raise funds for Alex’s Lemonade Stand, a national organization with local roots dedicated to fighting childhood cancer. The run begins and ends at Memorial Hall in Fairmount Park, with the course covering 3.1 miles in West Fairmount Park. Registration is $35.
Where: Memorial Hall, 4231 Avenue of the Republic, Philadelphia.
When: Sunday, November 9th at 8 a.m.

6. The Sweet Flow: Benefit Yoga Class with Live Music
What: This 90-minute class led by Brittany Policastro will feature musical accompaniment by local band Birdie Busch. The class benefits buildOn, a Beyond Asana fundraising project. A raffle and mingling will follow. It’s $20 to join in.
Where: Studio 34, 4522 Baltimore Avenue, West Philly.
When: Friday, November 7th from 8 to 10 p.m.

7. Flavor Tripping Party at Ploome
What: A wacky sensory experience at the Northern Liberties Pilates studio. They’ll be serving up miracle berries that make sour and salty things taste sweet—think lemons, hot sauce, vinegar, Tabasco and more. The party, which celebrates the studio’s new expansion, will also feature a parfait bar, hard cider station and cupcakes, as well as surprises for all attendees.

When: Friday, November 7th from 6 to 8 p.m.

8. Yoga Home Gratitude Feast
What: A community potluck dinner at Conshohocken’s Yoga Home open to current students and members of the community. Bring your favorite dish and the recipe to share.
Where: 424 East Elm Street, Conshohocken.
When: Sunday, November 16th from 6 to 9 p.m.

9. Cooking with Tea with Alexis Siemons of Teaspoons & Petals
What: A tea-focused cooking lesson in which you’ll learn how to cook and pair foods with a variety of teas. The menu includes Genmaicha Green Tea; Puerh Tea paired with Puerh French Onion & Raclette Cheese Tartine; Lapsang Souchong Tea Smoked Apple Cider; Lapsang Souchong Tea Winter Squash Soup; and Masala Chai Tea paired with Masala Chai Tea baked pears, chestnuts and Masala Chai tea Whipped Cream. It’s $70 to register.

10. West Fairmount Park Trail Run
What: Explore secret trails in Philly’s West Fairmount Park with the Fairmount Park Conservancy. This month’s guided run features three- and six-mile options. It’s $10 to participate. Register here.
