You Deserve It: 8 Places to Get Organic Beauty Treatments in the Philly Region

The other day, I treated myself to a much-needed pedicure and foot massage, and let me tell you, it was aaaaamazing. But the joy surrounding the fact that I could finally wear sandals shame-free again was soon overshadowed by a scary study on triclosan, a harmful chemical found in many antibacterial products, cosmetics and even toothpastes. I realized I had absolutely no idea what kinds of chemicals were lurking in the soaps, lotions or even polishes that cover my skin. That grossed me out even more than my un-pedicured toes had—and that’s saying a lot.

I decided to contact Philly health coach Jolene Hart, former InStyle beauty editor and author of Eat Pretty, to get the lowdown on where I could get primped and pampered in Philly, toxin-free, next time around. As Hart told me, “I love spa services, but I want the oil, lotion, serum or cleanser used on my skin to be free of ingredients that could potentially disrupt my hormone balance, or cause other health issues. Our skin absorbs a significant amount of what is applied to it, and I want all of those ingredients to be as safe as possible.” I’m with her.

Here, eight spots to score organic beauty services in Philly. Whether you’re looking to get an organic facial, keratin treatment, manicure or spray tan, we’ve got a spot for you. Check them out below.

Baked Sunless Tanning
815 South 4th Street, Queen Village, 610-570-7132.

If baking in the sun all day long isn’t your style (because, hellooo skin cancer, sun spots and wrinkles), then the organic spray tan offered at this salon is just the ticket to getting that I’ve-been-baking-in-the-sun-all-day look, minus the health hazards. Bonus: If you don’t have time to go to the salon, they can also come to you.

Eden Organics
15 East State Street, Doylestown, 609-259-3537.

This all-organic Doylestown salon is committed to using organic products that are also cruelty free—meaning, no bunnies had to suffer for your spa day. They offer organic facials and skin peels, along with a host of hair services and more.

Eviama Life Spa
109 South 13th Street, Midtown Village, 215-545-3344.

This Midtown Village spa is the perfect place to head for a dose of rest and relaxation. They offer a range of organic services, from facials to body wraps to waxing (with a honey-based wax!) and more. If you are looking for a way to pamper yourself this summer, owner Penny Ordway suggests the Dr. Hauschka Skin Care Classic Treatment, a two-hour long organic facial that includes a foot massage, which just so happens to be one of Hart’s favorite treatments, too.

Fabriq Spa
728 South 4th Street, Queen Village, 215-922-3235.

This local spa will rejuvenate your skin with organic facials, microdermabrasion, skin peels and more. It’s the ultimate organic Treat. Yo. Self.

Juju Organics
713 South 4th Street, Queen Village, 215-238-6080.

You can get all of your hair and nail needs taken care of, toxin-free, at this 100-percent organic salon. They offer everything from cuts to coloring, and even an organic keratin treatment for folks cursed with summertime frizz (that’s me!). And they only carry organic, non-toxic nail polishes, meaning there’s no formaldehyde being painted onto your fingertips—phew!

Luna Rosa Salon
611 Orianna Street, South Street, 215-733-0888.

If your hair has been through hell and hasn’t quite bounced back (A bleaching disaster, perhaps?), then a trip to this all-organic salon could be just what you need: The stylists at Luna Rosa are super conscious of the products they put on your head, using treatments and dyes that are gentle on your hair and free of bad-for-you chemicals.

Mi Cumbia
328 South 17th Street, Rittenhouse, 215-735-7980.

You know when you walk into a nail salon and it smells like someone sprayed nail polish-scented air-freshener everywhere? Well, lucky for you (and your nose), that won’t happen here—this completely organic nail salon is an acetone-free environment. Amen to that. And you can rest easy during your coconut pedicure (yep: a coconut pedicure) knowing that all of their polishes are water-based and non-toxic. Just make sure to call before you go in; service is by appointment only.
