Here’s an interesting development in the medical world. Newsworks is reporting that GlaxoSmithKline, the London-based drugmaker with a huge presence in the Philadelphia region (see: the shiny new office building in the Navy Yard), will stop paying doctors to promote its drugs in a move spurred by the Affordable Care Act toward better transparency. Relatedly, GSK won’t compensate sales reps anymore, either, based on prescription sales.

Mary Anne Rhyne, a GlaxoSmithKline spokeswoman, said the company headquartered in London will continue to offer educational grants to physicians, separate from its promotional efforts.
From now on, she added, it will use in-house medical personnel as education resources.
