Target Faces Backlash for ‘Manatee’ Plus-Size Color

Shoppers are outraged after the store chose to name its grey maxi dress after the large animal.

Uh, oh. Target is facing some angry customers over the name chosen for a maxi-dress color.

According to Action News, a shopper posted two identical pictures of the Mossimo brand’s Kimono Maxi Dress. The only differences? The size, and the fact that the gray verison of the standard size was referred to as “dark heather gray,” while the plus-size version was listed as “manatee gray.”

The self-proclaimed plus-sized shopper said she feels the term “manatee” is a hurtful jab at her body shape, given that manatees are pretty large animals and are often considered the elephant of the ocean.

A Target spokesperson has since responded, apologizing and saying that the name of the color was “an unintentionally oversight” that the company plans to fix. Target has since changed the color name of the plus-size product on its website from “manatee gray” to “gray.”
