Alas, it was but just a week ago that we all officially found out whether or not we made the cut in the Broad Street Run’s first-ever registration lottery. But if you’re already having second thoughts about running the May 5th 10-miler (no judging!), you have two options starting today: bib deferral or transfer. Both programs opened this morning.
If you elect to defer your registration, you’ll have guaranteed entry into the 2014 race. Note that you won’t be refunded your entry fee for this year’s race, and you’ll be required to pay a new entry fee next year. So all the deferral process does is get you around next year’s lottery. You can defer your registration here. Deferral ends on April 26th.
The other option is bib transfer, whereby registered runners may transfer (hence, uh, the name) their numbers to those who weren’t able to enter the lottery or who didn’t make it through. Here’s how it works: Anyone who wishes to transfer a bib can post on the race’s message board. (People seeking bibs can post on a separate buyers message board.) Once you have an interested taker, you’ll fill out a Transfer Number Form and be emailed a special code. You must then forward that code to the transferee—that is, the person who’s accepting your bib number—and that person has 72 hours to enter the code to receive your number. The transferee must pay a $15 fee. Other fees on top of that have to be worked out between you and the person taking your number. Note that if you charge more than the bib’s $40 face value you will be banned from future races, according to the rules stated on the website.
As of this morning at 11:30, there are already two transfer posts on the sellers message board and six on the buyers. The transfer program closes on April 19th at 11:59 p.m.
