The Checkup: Are You a Swiper or Cocooner? A Visual Guide to Desk Posture

Looks like there are patterns to our posture at the office. What kind of sloucher are you?

• I had to page through Bloomberg Businessweek’s new guide to desk posture three times (yup, they got a lot of pageviews out of me) before I could decide which describes me best. After careful thought and consideration, I’ve decided I fall somewhere between a leaner and a take-it-in-er, depending on the task at hand. All this really means is that I have terrible, terrible posture, which could be why my back often hurts and my shoulders have knots the size of acorns. So I guess it’s time to employ some of these posture-perfecting stretches and, you know, stop slouching in my chair. What kind of desk-sitter are you?

• Well, this is something: A new study reported in The Atlantic found that Facebook may have some memory-improving powers. How it does so, exactly, remains to be seen, but the study found that older people who used Facebook scored better on memory tests than controls. Read more here.

• And now for some murky news on supplements: A new report by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force says that older women shouldn’t take vitamin D and calcium supplements, and that there’s not enough evidence to say whether it would help anyone else with bone health, either.
