6 Turkey Trots Near Philly

Sweat off that Thanksgiving feast at these fun races in the area.

Abington YMCA Gobble Wobble 5K Run and 2 Mile Walk
When: Thanksgiving Day, 9 a.m.
Where: 1073 Old York Road, Abington.
Cost: $35.

Join in this neighborhood tradition for a quiet run through Abington’s residential streets, ending with an “Olympic-style” lap around the Y’s outdoor track. A post-race DJ and free raffle gets the holiday party started early. Online registration is closed, but you can sign up that morning at the event.

Bucks County Road Runners Thanksgiving Day 5-Miler
When: Thanksgiving Day, 9 a.m.
Where: 3 Doublewoods Lane  (at the intersection of Route 413 and 332 By-pass), Langhorne.
Cost: $35.

Join the Bucks County Road Runners for this 23-year-old Turkey Day tradition. The course weaves through both residential streets and open fields, so the scenery never gets boring.

Chester County Turkey Trot 5K
When: Thanksgiving Day, 8 a.m.
Where: Downingtown West High School, 445 Manor Ave, Downingtown.
Cost: $30.

Cash prizes are awarded to the top three male and female finishers and the top masters finisher, but top age-group finishers win prizes, too: homemade pies! The race course goes around school grounds and through surrounding neighborhoods, finishing in the high school’s stadium.

Fairmount Park Turkey Trot
When: Thanksgiving Day, 8:30 a.m.
Where: Please Touch Museum, 4231 North Concourse Drive, Philadelphia.
Cost: $35.

Trade in the morning football game for this five-mile race beginning at the Please Touch Museum. Running the fast and flat course to Memorial Hall and back is a great way to burn off some pre-feast calories, so you can have your candied yams and eat them, too.

Philadelphia Insurance Companies Turkey Trot
When: Thanksgiving Day, 9 a.m.
Where: Northwestern Avenue & Germantown Avenue, Philadelphia.
Cost: $40.

This five-miler along Forbidden Drive benefits Face to Face Germantown, which provides meals, basic health care, legal and social services, computer training and creative arts studios to the neighborhood’s disadvantaged residents. The race is now in its 20th year.

St. Bernadette Turkey Trot
When: Saturday, November 24th at 9 a.m.
Where: St. Bernadette Church & School, Bond & Harper Avenues, Drexel Hill.
Cost: $25.

Now in its fourth year, this 5K lends a good post-Thanksgiving sweat. It winds through Drexel Hill’s neighborhood streets, with cash prizes and medals for top finishers. Not up for a 5K? There’s also a family-friendly one-mile walk.
