>> The 2012 Top Dentists section is now live! Access it here.

Philly, your guide to great teeth has arrived. We’ve worked hard for the past few months to compile a list of the area’s 202 very best dentists for all your checkups, tooth pain, emergencies and more. On Friday, you’ll get to see the fruits of our labors, when the issue officially hits newsstands!

All this week, we’ll be rolling out great content from the issue, from a kiss-and-tell taste test of products that’ll make (or break) your next make-out session (yup, we’re talking about bacon-flavored toothpaste) to a list of six Philly foods your dentist wants you to avoid. And to help take the dread out of your next appointment, we’ve scoped out cool new technology that’s making painful procedures a thing of the past.

Before we get to the good stuff, a word on how we compiled our list: We sent letters to every dentist in Philadelphia and the surrounding seven- county area, to the address on record, inviting them to nominate three peers for Top Dentist in each dental specialty via an online survey. Five hundred and sixty-two took the survey, amounting to more than 4,400 nominations. The resulting list of 20 top dentists in each specialty, by votes (including all those who were tied), was reviewed by an advisory board made up of nine dentists in various specialties, chosen for their credentials and the high number of votes they received.

Go here on Friday to get our updated online database of Top Dentists. And be sure to check back this week for more great content from the issue.

Smile big, Philly—oral hygiene just got awesome.

I’m curious why you used this methodology. Why would one dentist be able to tell if another dentist is a “Top Dentist”? Wouldn’t it make more sense to poll patients?
