Why Do Wedding Invites Come Double Enveloped?

shutterstock_136106588Today on the Huffington Post’s wedding blog, we spied one of those “Wow, that’s a great question” questions: Why do wedding invitations come in two envelopes?

You know – you open the first and then there you are again, faced with yet another envelope, looking very much like the one you just opened, sans stamp. What’s the deal?

Anna Post (great-great-granddaughter of etiquette guru Emily Post) answered the question, because, naturally, she would know.

As she was heading out for a night in New York City, my friend Rebecca took off her lovely emerald-cut engagement ring and placed it in her lap to put on some hand lotion.

“It was lotion, lotion, lotion, some conversation with my friends and before you know it we were all jumping out of the car to go into the restaurant,” she tells me. “I was distracted. I didn’t even remember the ring was in my lap until the next morning as I was getting dressed.”

PW Reader Ring: Samantha & Larry!

Samantha's one-of-a-kind ring.

Samantha’s one-of-a-kind ring.

The Couple: Samantha and Larry from Titusville, NJ.

The Ring: The ring is made from platinum and features a stunning center stone. It’s a two-prong setting that swirls around the diamond to keep it safe. The ring was designed by Diana Vincent in Washington Crossing, PA. Larry picked it out all by himself, but he knew I had my eye on this particular designer! I wanted something unique and modern, unlike all of the antique designs I’ve been inundated with recently. It’s simple and elegant and I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. My favorite part is the fact that Diana’s workshop is local and they don’t mass-produce their jewelry; they custom make every single ring.

Certain wedding songs take careful planning – your first dance, dances with parents – but why is it that reception songs seem to get all the thoughtfulness?

Yesterday CNN posted a story about wedding march songs that got us thinking about all the alternatives to “Here Comes the Bride.” And the options are limitless, really! Couples interviewed in their story mentioned everything from a Phantom of the Opera tune to “La Mer”  by Nine Inch Nails.

I remember a gorgeous outdoor ceremony where the bride came down the aisle to the Hawaiian-y rendition of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” by Israel Kamakawiwo’ole. It was whimsical, upbeat and perfectly set the tone of the day.

So tell us, have you given much thought to your walk down the aisle song?
