Choral Remix

Choirs go indie rock in Wayne this weekend

By Holly Luu

What do you get when you put six choirs and 13 songwriters into a tricked-out church? Beyond Measure from the Philadelphia Songwriter's Project. After 18 months of rearranging choirs and remixing music, the members pour their hearts into 12 songs this Saturday at the Church of the Savior in Wayne. Music from prominent local artists was selected and remade to best employ the layered texture of each choir's vocal harmony. The result is a total reinterpretation of songs from celebrated Philly artists — ranging from Joy Simone's jazz-infused neo-soul to the mellow rock of Erik Mitchell and the eclectic indie folk of Maggie, Pierce and EJ. And, to round out the unexpected combos, the stage is set in a high-tech state-of-the-art church. If that doesn't bring you a little closer to heaven, then maybe the finale will, when six of Philly's premier choirs — that's about 100 singers — perform as one super-group. Cause baby, there ain't no octave high enough to keep you from going to this.
