Your Week: Four Cellists, One Jackson and 44,000 Bloodthirsty Fans
By Victor Fiorillo
Monday ... It's not often that you'll find a cello quartet at South Street's TLA, but when said cello quartet plays heavy metal, it's seems perfectly almost rational. Finnish group Apocalyptia — seen here playing Metallica's "Master of Puppets" — hits at 8 p.m. And for an event that couldn't be more different than that, Jimmie "J.J." Walker begins a weeklong stand at the Trop in A.C. Whether or not he is still dy-no-mite, I have no idea.
Tuesday ... Clap your hands and say, "Yeah!" Semi-Philly-connected outfit Clap Your Hands Say Yeah makes an appearance at the Barbary. And Philadelphia Orchestra Associate Conductor Rossen Milanov holds the baton one last time at the Kimmel before Charles Dutoit snatches it up for the regular season (which starts this weekend). The program includes works by Tchaikovsky, Haydn and Lutoslawski.
Wednesday ... It should go without saying, but the Pennant-chasing Phillies invite the Brewers into Citizens Bank Park for a beating of untold proportions (we hope). If you're not lucky enough to be holding tickets, there are plenty floating around on Craigslist, or just show up early for the pep rally and look really, really needy.
Thursday ... Game 2, obviously. But you'll have a much, much easier time getting tickets for Janet Jackson with LL Cool J at the Wachovia Center or for the Academy of Vocal Arts' Giargiai Bel Canto Competition at the Kimmel. Think of it as American Idol, but with opera.
UPDATE: The Janet Jackson performance has been postponed due to illness.
Check back on Friday for The Weekender.
