Your Week: August 18th-21st
Two Stanleys, two plays, and a tribute to James Brown
By Victor Fiorillo
Monday ... What do you want? It's a Monday in Philadelphia, so there's not exactly a bottomless pit of new and crazy entertainment. The weekly Fringe Previews continue at Plays & Players in Rittenhouse, bringing you a taste of what's coming in the Fringe portion of the Live Arts/Fringe Fest, which starts on August 29th. The Sunset Sessions happy hours at Chris' Jazz Cafe are catching on, now that they give you a free drink ticket in exchange for your $5 admission (the cover goes to the musicians). Funky jazz ensemble Highbrid plays from 5 to 7 p.m. And if you have a need to see Goodfellas yet again, the Troc will fulfill it.
Tuesday ... Two Stanleys. Virtuoso jazz guitarist Stanley Jordan (ever see him play "Autumn Leaves" on two guitars simultaneously?) burns up the fretboard at a free concert in Wiggins Waterfront Park in Camden. And at the Keswick, it's Philly bassman extraordinaire Stanley Clarke, who performed with Chick Corea a couple of weeks back at the Mann. Here he is battering an upright bass in ways you didn't think were possible.
Wednesday ... As Woody Allen continues to make comparatively mediocre movies, it makes me crave his classic catalog even more, including Annie Hall, showing at the Bryn Mawr Film Institute. The Phils and the Nationals get it on down in South Philly. And though the theater spigot is at a trickle until the 29th, there's still Spamalot and Shakespeare.
Thursday ... If you have just been dying to get a little ballet in your life, the Film Institute offers the Bolshoi Ballet's presentation of The Pharoah's Daughter. And on the other side of the cultural spectrum, proceed northward to Trenton for the Regeneration Tour featuring, um, Human League, Flock of Seagulls, and Belinda Carlisle. Guess where I'll be. Wrong. I'll be shaking my ass like the white boy that I am at the Kimmel as they pay tribute to the Godfather of Soul.
Don't forget to check back on Friday for the Weekender picks.
