The Weekender: The Diceman, Rod Stewart, and All That Jazz

By Victor Fiorillo

If you still think he's sexy ... The Boston Globe and The Boston Herald both enjoyed — for the most part — Rod Stewart's show in Beantown a week ago, so if you're enough of a fan to pay $200 and up to see him, you'll want to be at the Borgata Friday or Saturday night. Clearly this recession isn't affecting everyone.

If you still think — or ever thought — he's funny ... He was banned from MTV (for life). His appearance on Saturday Night Live caused Nora Dunn to quit the show. And then he completely dropped off the face of the Earth. Well, apparently God has a sense of humor, people, because Andrew Dice Clay is back and he's got a few particularly profane things to say at the Borgata this weekend. Rod Stewart fans, be forewarned.

Weed heed ... If you're considering riding dirty as you head to the Jimmy Buffett show at Caesars on Sunday or the Allman Bros/Bob Weird & Ratdog show at the Susquehanna Bank Center on Saturday, just remember that the New Jersey State Police are not on your side. What Philly cops might let slip, those on the other side of the river will use as an excuse to go all Tiananmen on your ass.

I'm wrong. There, I said it ... Several weeks ago, I told you here about the Terrence Howard show at the TLA, suggesting you get tickets quickly. Well, I'm not ashamed to admit when I am wrong. The Saturday night show is not sold out. In fact, it's so not sold out that it's been moved from the TLA to some place called Luxe Lounge on Arch Street. And instead of a reserved-seating show, it's general admission. Sounds like it will be a real clusterfuck, but I guess if you are starstruck by the Hustle & Flow protagonist, who has a huge house somewhere around Lafayette Hill, tickets are $35.

If the bracelet is just not enough ... The Lance Armstrong Foundation holds its main fundraising event for the year — The Livestrong Challenge — up in Montco. There's still time to register for the 5k run/walk or any of the 10- to 100-mile bike rides.

And all that jazz ... The Art Museum explores avant garde jazz Friday night as part of their long-running Art After 5 series. Prolific Philly jazz guitairist Jimmy Bruno should pack them in at Chris' Jazz Cafe on Saturday, so if you want a table, make a reservation. And if the phrase "smooth jazz" is not more offensive to you than the Diceman, the Smooth Jazz Summer Nights continue at Penn's Landing with a free Friday night performance by Nick Colionne, who has played guitar for folks like the Staple Sisters and Curtis Mayfield.

Check back next week for our preview of the Live Arts Festival/Philly Fringe, which opens on Friday, August 29th.
