Your Week: August 4th-7th
The happenings going on this week
By Victor Fiorillo
Monday
Tonight’s Aimee Mann show at World Cafe Live is sold out (as is Tuesday’s), and the local ticket agencies, who aren’t exactly up on the whole singer-songwriter concert biz, don’t have any tickets as far as I can tell (the guy at Sherry’s Tix on 15th didn’t even know who she was). There are a few on Craigslist, but I personally recommend just hanging out around the venue and strong-arming one of those frail, pacifist WXPN types. Or, you can just wait until December and see Mann at the Keswick.
Tuesday
$29 lawn seats just went on sale for the best jazz show you’re going to see all summer, the Return to Forever Tour featuring Chick Corea, Al Di Meola, Philly bass legend Stanley Clarke and Lenny White. The Inquirer’s David Adler said more about it in Sunday’s paper than I ever could. On the other side of our Metropolis, the first-place Phils (hopefully) provide a beatdown to the Marlins.
Wednesday
I have been so done with them for over a decade, but the Gipsy Kings apparently still have a following. Plus, their show (also at the Mann) is probably a much better fit for your hump day than the earsplitting Judas Priest/Motorhead show at Susquehanna Bank Center. Both shows exude a certain kind of sexual energy, so I guess it depends on what you are looking for — roses and wine or leather and bite marks. Either way, should be a hell of a night. Speaking of sexual energy, though previews started last weekend, Mauckingbird Theatre Company’s gay take on Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet officially opens tonight.
Thursday
Julie Andrews is doing something at the Mann. I’m not sure what. But I don’t think she’s singing, so if you’re expecting a little "hills are alive" and whatnot, you might be disappointed. For something completely different than Julie, there’s CSS, which stands for Cansei de Ser Sexy, which means something like “I got tired of being sexy” (something I say all the time). And since they’re from Brazil, they were certainly sexy at one time or another. Anyway, they are at the Troc. To see if you like them or not, check out the video for “Let’s Make Love and Listen to Death from Above.” If you don’t like them, you’re just no fun, so you probably also wouldn’t be interested in the Blue Velvet screening at Bryn Mawr Film Institute.
For weekend picks, check back on Friday for The Weekender.
