Overall vibe: Generations of DuPont largesse, from workers’ residences transformed into an upscale inn to a corporate-bankrolled museum, bring culture to this bucolic patch of Delaware along the Brandywine.

What to do/see: The Hagley Museum (302-658-2400), largely underwritten by DuPont, is a fascinating study of American industry and commerce. Winterthur, the du Pont country estate with a premier collection of American furnishings and antiques, is less than a mile away (800-448-3883).

Where to eat: Krazy Kat’s, at the Inn at Montchanin Village, has a feline decor fetish, but the food is serious, including robust homemade rabbit sausages served alongside elk medallions (302-888-4200).

Where to stay: The Inn at Montchanin Village took quaint residences built by DuPont for local factory workers and turned them into a series of well-appointed rooms spread over 11 small houses. A former farmhouse on the property has a warm sitting area with a fireplace and an honor bar for drinks (302-888-2133; montchanin.com; rooms from $179).
