The Very Public Self-Destruction of Alycia Lane

Fortunately, within weeks of sending out Lane’s tapes, Willinger was getting calls about her. When she interviewed in Philly, she already had some very attractive feelers — most notably at WABC in New York and KABC in L.A. But Philadelphia made sense to her — CBS 3 was offering her the evening time-slots she wanted, she’d be close to her family, and the position wouldn’t require her to work crazy hours and travel all the time. “In Philly,” her sister Nicole says, “she could still have a life and do what she loves.”

ON SEPTEMBER 15, 2003, Team Mendte and Lane debuted on Eyewitness News. Lane’s main role at CBS 3 was quickly apparent: to look gorgeous and fix the troubled station brand. At first, she was flattered by being called “the hottest story in local TV.” But it didn’t take long for viewers to e-mail CBS 3 and call her snooty and impersonal. Most of the e-mails were from women — not a good sign, since TV stations vie for a coveted demographic of females ages 25 to 54. And she wasn’t exactly making friends with everyone in the newsroom. In front of several people, she screamed at a production assistant who was fresh out of college, causing the woman to cry at her desk; another time, while shooting a promo, she got so angry she hurled her earpiece, which ended up hitting a staffer in the forehead.

This is where the station bosses made their first Alycia Lane mistake. They seemed to give her a pass after the incidents, worried about their star anchor’s feelings. Plus, they figured some staffers were jealous of the new girl, who was pretty much a sensation before she even walked in the door. This sent a very clear message to those around Lane: She was special; don’t mess with her. It also sent a very clear message to Lane: You can do as you please.

The station did have to address that female-viewer disconnect, though. So in spring 2004, then-general manager Peter Dunn sent Lane to Los Angeles to interview Dr. Phil McGraw. To promote his new series Relationship Rescue Retreat, Dr. Phil had granted interviews to reporters in several large markets.

Lane and a cameraman sat in the Dr. Phil studio, watching as two upcoming episodes were taped. Then, with the audience gone, the interview began. It started out as a regular Q&A. But then something happened. Lane asked Dr. Phil, who knew that her divorce had been finalized in November, “Why is divorce so hard?” Her voice cracked. Her chin quivered. She wiped a tear running down her cheek. “You’re crying for the man you wish he was, not the man he was,” Dr. Phil told her. At the end, she hugged him.

Back in Philly, when people at the station watched the raw tape, they realized Lane was suffering more than anyone knew. But management was aware that other stations in Philly were having lots of success with female newscasters airing first-person stories about their own struggles. The previous fall, pregnant NBC 10 anchor Renee Chenault-Fattah brought cameras to her ultrasound. And it was May sweeps.

I said months ago that she was in serious trouble. click here After the whole thing with Chris Wragge, it was clear she had problems that needed professional help. Like Britney, no one around her cared enough to direct her to counseling before she blew her whole life up. She'll live to report another day, but not in a big market like Philly anytime soon.
I wish her well

A few weeks ago some one wrote that Alycia Lane was no Jessica Savitch. After reading this article and comparing it to the movie Almost Golden I think that writer was dead wrong. Alycia seems to have many of the same problems and personality traits that Jessica did. I recently had a chance to tell Alycia that I appreciated her time in Philly and was hoping everything worked out for her. Her response was genuine, sincere and kind. At the time I thought working out would mean avoiding a felony conviction. Getting back into TV new and working her way back up to a top market. After reading this article I know that working out will be taking a behind the scenes job, getting re-married, and having the family she always wanted.

Alycia is a good person who did a good job at CBS and brought her light to Philadelphia. We need to support her in this time. She is presumed innocent and we haven't heard her side of the story. She's a very loving person. I am sure she will be vindicated. It's easy to kick someone when they are down. Don't do it people. We are the city of brotherly love. Alycia We Love You! God Bless You!

Alycia will come out of this shining. Philly lost one of its best. Her contagious smile will be missed. I enjoyed her stories. Its sad to see how our society can bring someone down so quickly. Write things that are not true and take accusations as facts. Alycia you’ll do great. If you read this I wish you the best! Keep your head up because people love seeing successful people fail. Don’t let them get the best of you. By the way.. this article was way too long and is all over the place. Not an easy read.

She should have been let go after the Emailing the Photos to Eisen. Anyone else would have been severely censured, yet she wasn’t even given a slap on the wrist. Why? Because she’s beautiful? I’m sure the station saw a giant law suit and knew it would be easier to attempt to turn her image around. It worked…for about a minute. Unfortunately, she is her own worst enemy. CBS 3 was right to terminate her contract. Regardless of her guilt or innocence in the events that occurred in NY, she doesn’t keep herself out of the news. She clearly wants to be the story. How can I take her seriously when she reports a murder or a kidnapping? I wish her good things. It just seems that she needs to decide which Alycia she wants to be: serious reporter Alycia; or the wild partying, Hollywood star-want-to-be Alycia. Both have their appeal. And one seems to be coming easier than the other.

Sincere best wishes for immense peace, joy, love & fulfillment for Ms. Lane. However, it is clear she does have a serious personality disorder, one from the DSM-IV, and she needs therapy and possibly pharmacology. If she did just one of the incidents alleged, then this is truly the case. Ms. Lane did an outstanding job of projecting warmth and compassion via the teleprompter but as we have come to see this is not who she purports to be in person. If it’s a case of “because I could do it (get away with it sense)” then psychosis; if it’s “because I couldn’t be who they wanted — that reputable, ethical professional” then that’s another type of disorder.

KYW and CBS acted as judge, jyury and executioner in its firing of Alycia and its attack on her credibility - thw lifeblood of a reporter. No one is stupid enough to do what Alycia allegedly did in NY, especially when they're earning 750,000 a year. Cos are notorious liars, reporters are not. If Alycia had been a man in the same trouble, the station would have suspended her until the issue was resolved. Their reaction to her was sexist and uncalled for, and their statement a low blow. I hope she sues them for everything they have. And when it's all over, I also hope she wins millions from the lying cops in New York who defamed her. I can almost guarantee the incident as they describe it NEVER HAPPENED! Good luck Alycia - you're a fine reporter and a fine human being and you deserve better than KYW. You were too good for them in the first place.

Throw a anchor's toupee in any newsroom and you'll hit someone with Alycia's issues. It's the nature of the biz. We're all screwy. News gives us a legitimate outlet to be pushy, self-righteous and callous, all while looking damn fine. You need those traits to be a good reporter. Unfortunately, you can't shut them off once you leave the station for the day. Alycia should have just sold her condo, moved into her office and start shacking up with someone at 'KY. She would have been just fine. BTW: she's back anchoring in a year. My guess--in Rhode Island--where a former Philly news director famous for saving TV train wrecks is now GM. (see: Sharon Reed)

As another commenter noted, this woman should not be judged by the media, but by a court. Firing her before that is highly disturbing. Furthermore, the media, including this magazine, have been very willing to glamourize her before this happened. They eat the orange and throw away the peel.

"No one making $750k a year...would do anything stupid." Really? Watch TV & see a piece about Britney Spears lately? Ms. Lane's faults are well-worn territory. My main issue is with the management of CBS3, which rather than relieve itself of the problems Lane caused either through discipline or dismissal, instead justified her mis-behavior, and looked for ways to exploit her so the station could repair its long-damaged brand and claim a win in the ratings. From an insiders' view, this story is only the latest example of Hunter S. Thompson's maxim about television: "The TV business is uglier than most things. It is normally perceived as some kind of cruel and shallow money trench through the heart of the journalism industry, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free." Readers of this article looking for compassion will find slim pickins' here. TV news is first and foremost, a business. Alycia Lane, a beautiful though troubled and moderately talented news reader

I too am a lead anchor in a top 50 market who went to Northwestern and also know Rich Eisen. The difference - I've stayed married - have three kids and keep my life "together." Those of us from Northwestern have watched this train wreck for the last year and don't understand why people like Alycia are put up with by management. There are plenty of REALLY good female anchors out there - who are great looking, smart and NOT crazy. I get frustrated with people like Alycia being allowed to continue in this business. It looks terrible for the field of journalism - and shows that many in tv news management are not fit to run a popsicle stand let alone a company. I hope some news directors and general managers have learned something from this.

It's 2008, and the anchors now see themselves as above the news. Then again, you're likely to get better news coverage on shows like "ET" or "Inside Edition" (hosted by drug perv Pat O'Brien. Remember him and Betsy trying to seduce that girl?). Whatever happened to the days where you tuned to see the anchor you trusted the most? Why do you think Jim Gardner rules the roost? He comes off as endearing and trustworthy to many, and not a bigger story than the ones he reports on. There's a reason it's referred to as "Tabloid 10". Ms. Lane blew up her spot, now she has to deal with it. And, don't give me the Liberated Woman "she was done wrong because she's a woman" crap. She should find a Hollywood specialist dealing with anger management. She obviously has some issues with fame getting to her head.

Alycia's career in TV News(no longer even remotely considered journalism), allowed her to permanently capture her own likeness on the screen, and in doing so, caused her personality to fracture into multiple personas that not even she could recognize or explain. She is not the most fatally flawed character, nor the most innocent. She is just the latest sendup of a narcissistic generation that feeds on it's own. She will be reborn only to be imprinted on the TV screen again and again and again. Will that make her happy? Not until she realizes that IT'S JUST A JOB!!!
What a shame.

Alycia Lane worked with me on a potential sweeps piece. I was going on the Dr. Phil show, and having known her a bit, we thought it'd be a good idea to film an interview before taping the show and after. Long story short: I got an ambush job by Dr. Phil and was lied to by his producers to humiliate me and make it more sensational. Obviously, the story idea fell apart as the angle it was going for was ruined. Alycia was great to work with. A true professional in every way. Anchors should be a good reporter, which she is. She was very supportive to my situation after what was the most humiliating experience of my life. In her similar plight, I fully support her. She was unfairly assumed guilty until proven innocent by CBS 3. The facts of the arrest are a matter of she said, she said. I would highly encourage her to sue the station for unfairly firing her.

First of all, congratulations Alycia! Even though I can identify with the feelings of many of my fellow bloggers here, I suggest that they not judge Ms. Lane too harshly, especially given the facts. Specifically, that the judge has basically thrown out the case against her. Regardless of how descriptive a secondhand narrative is, which I must say this was quite impressive, it is still just that: secondhand. None of us should be so quick to judge others because none of us know exactly how we would react in similar situations. Alycia Lane is not the first person to ever react with some angst when be targeted by police. Most law abiding members of society believe that there are other people out there that police should target (for instance the man whom shot and killed a boy over a snowball today) Meanwhile, CBS had no right to fire this woman based on her arrest. As the large settlement they will inevitably offer Ms. Lane as a result of her lawsuit shall prove. It is a fact that fa

Boy, shouldn't you all feel silly. So much for innocent until proven guilty. And shame on you Philly magazine for jumping right in there. Didn't any "journalist" ever stop to wonder where the all the personal information and copies of e-mails were coming from? Gee, and just how credible are these "inside sources" at Channel 10? My family and I stopped watching 10 news over a year when every story was given a tabloid-type tag line. Sensationalizing the news was just not for us. Tell us the facts and let us make up our own minds. Looks like you guys did a bit of sensationalizing yourself.

Pls. give Alycia Lane a break. Now you guys must have realized what went on in the background when you saw the news of "Larry Mendt" getting arreseted for accessing Alycia Lane's email account. Now you know how these pics and accidental emails going to wrong persons. This is called witch hunting. Hope you are all very proud of your entertaining articles in bringing down an anchor and her career. Hope you feel good about yourself or running to the church or your place of worship to confess?

To a non-Philadelphian, this whole thing looks a tempest in a teapot, anyway. The whole Eisen thing is ridiculous and nobody's business. Now we see that a co-anchor is alleged to have been--very illegally--making this woman's life everyone's business.
"Celebrity" nonsense ... what a waste of time

From someone who hasn't lived in the Philadelphia area since 1989, what a ridiculous bunch of nonsense! How much has Phila slipped when people like Mendte and Lane are accorded the stature of a John Facenda? What is it about the Phila media that it loves to turn everything about local celebrities into a soap opera? I still love my Philadelphia sports teams, but dammit, I'm sick of the Phila media making mountains out of molehills about what someone like McNabb says or does. It's no coincidence that in that climate Phila hasn't seen a major sports title in 25 years.

I lived in Philly 20 years ago and there was a local news babe that looked alot like Alycia. Gorgeous with great legs. And she would play with them during her interview segments. Drove me nuts. Probably great for ratings...

She sent photos of herself in a bikini to a married man. What was that about? Is it part of her job to be a homewrecker? Can't she find a single man? Let that slob work for $9 an hour like everybody else and she'll see what life is really like out there.

"If the details prove to be less scandalous than initially reported, no one will be interested..." If Alycia Lane agrees to have sex with me, multiple times, on a towel facing a sunset on a Caribbean beach after a day of drunken Dance Dance Revolution and Mario Kart on the cabana...then yes, yes I would be interested in hearing the less scandalous details.

Seriously people, pause for a moment and reverse the situation. What if some as*hole at work was spying on your computer and found all that porn you are looking at during office hours? Maybe you are married, with kids waiting for their perfect daddy to come home. How would you feel if someone would attempt to screw with your proffessional and personal life?! I think it is safe to assume you would not take the threat very well... The point is that today you hear stories from friends and family how someone is spying on them at work, like an overachiever and a kiss as* who wants your job. What is happening to you America?! Everybody needs to watch and take care of their own sh*t first! And don't be too lienient in making excuses for your pathetic little spying game. Ultimately what happens is FREE and what a fantastic way of marketing an individual. Creating even greater star D list status. Hopefully, all that free publicity opened gateways to a more desirable, List C star status. Sometim

I may not know much about Alycia but it's clear that some of the pieces include low self esteem, possible bipolar traits, spoiled rotten by all the success, together with poor impulse control and for sure sexual addiction (jumping from boyfriend to boyfriend, boudoir photography). That's a good start. Whatever else there is wrong with Alycia there is one way back to finding meaning and joy in your life, and that is Jesus. Yes, believe it or not Jesus is the way.

I worked with Alycia. Absolute class. Never a problem. I would work with her or for her again in a heartbeat. The writer of this article apparently is using an overweight certain source who works at the assignment desk at CBS3 with questionable sexuality, who, after attending many of Alycia's private parties, and pretended to be her friend, stabbed her in the back, as he did many others. You know who you are. Your stupid dance moves on that UPN promo was pretty much a representation of the manic idiot your are, and you deserve to rot. Alycia, watch your back, and I wish you nothing but success! Hell, think about it this way Al, if you ever need a proof reader to double check anything you've written, Larry could use the work. Nowadays, if I need to fall asleep, I just put on the CBS3 broadcast at 11 and watch a once powerful entity try to crawl up the ratings while being cut off at the knees. What a mistake for letting you go. Give 'em hell Al. And please stop hanging out wi

I don't know Alicia Lane, but as a psychiatrist, i have studied many cases and blogs such as this one. What I can say is that both the writer and some bloggers on this site need some serious help. Get a life people, or maybe you don't have one? The fiercer your comment the more likely you have a serious problem yourself. Think about it. This is however a healthy way to cope with your frustrations.

OU1 Here (Again)Alycia, you are doing just fine. Keep your head up and keep acting like you know that--- HATERS will soon find somebody else to 'HATE ON.' But here's my concern: Bad news can be good GOLDEN news if you have a CREATIVE PUBLICIST. Ask Jerry Penicolli about that works. Now is the time for her agent to make deals. Hell, here in Philadelphia, I've personally known of Company Heads PAYING FOR POSITIVE NEWS ARTICLES and STORIES. Fight back with your own NEWS ABOUT YOU! Pay to have somebody spy on the life of the camera person stalking you. Everybody has dirt. Uh, 'FLIP THE SCRIPT.'

Seriously who cares what this woman did? It was obviously in poor taste, but did she really ruin this guys marriage? Probably not since nothing really happened. Besides the guy, like every sexually healthy male, probably looks at porn online so bikini shots are small potatoes if you think about it. I like this woman. She has moxie. Not to mention she's hot. The wife of that NFL player should be flattered that she married a man that beautiful women wish they could have.

There is a sworn statement from a New York City police officer that Alycia Lane hit a female police officer and called her a F*cking Dyke. And this women is employable? She was let go by another liberal judge who thinks it is okay to slap a cop.

She looks nervous as all hell. I finally googled her -- thought I recalled the Eisen incident. Wow. Just -- wow. She came to KNBC about the time that a local news skank was dating the L.A. mayor and reporting on him (this was his second affair with an anchor, although now he's divorced, at least). I agree that a lot of these people have to have unattractive traits to survive professsionally, but they're all out of control. It's a shame that Lane has screwed herself professionally -- she sounds as if she had talent.

Word is she is at it again in LA - flirting with male managers and having a close relationship with one of the lead male anchors. She was trouble in Miami, trouble in Philly and now LA. Larry Mendte is a good man and a great broadcaster - I feel so bad that he got caught up with this witch. I hope he gets back on his feet soon.
