The Essential Shore: Sweet Shops

La Patisserie
Only in Cape May could you custom-order French breads sculpted into starfish and flounder, and fondant-swathed cakes dripping with shells and delivered to the dunes. 524 Washington Street Mall, Cape May, 609-884-7107; lapatisseriecapemay.com.

Kohler’s Bakery
Cream doughnuts and crumbcake, cinnamon buns and coconut macaroons: why Avaloners rise and shine. 2709 Dune Drive, Avalon, 609-967-3694; kohlers-bakery.com.

Dot’s Pastry Shoppe
Dot’s made-them-the-same-since-1947 wares (cream-cheese danish, cinnamon strudel, sticky buns, jelly doughnuts) come in boxes tied up with string. 3148 Asbury Avenue, Ocean City; 609-399-0770.

Rauhauser’s Candies
This is where you come for presents for Nana and Pop-Pop after you invade their house all summer: roasted cashews, buttercreams, fudge, and chocolate-coated mint patties. 721 Asbury Avenue, Ocean City; 609-399-1465.

Jagielky’s Home Made Candies
Part of Margate’s mini Rodeo circuit: Casel’s for roast chicken, Knit Wit for a bikini, Starbucks for iced mocha, Jagielky’s for caramel turtles, chocolate-dipped marshmallows, and seemingly sinless nonpareils. 8018 Ventnor Avenue, Margate, 609-822-2204; jagielkys.com.

Mino Bake Shop
The A.C. outpost of the Pleasantville bakery feels like Isgro’s, in miniature. Single-serve strawberry shortcakes, filled-to-order cannoli, and, if you get there early, cinnamon doughnuts. 4100 Ventnor Avenue, Atlantic City, 609-344-8627; minosbakeshop.com.

Aversa’s Italian Bakery
The only place on the island to satisfy cravings for slim pizzelles, pignoli cookies, oversize cream puffs, birthday cheesecakes — along with tomato pies, Italian breads, and roast-pork-and-rabe stromboli. 3101 Atlantic-Brigantine Boulevard, Brigantine, 609-264-8880; aversasbakery.com.

Crust & Crumb
This Fantasy Island-side alcove is justly famous for cinnamon-touched elephant ears, buttery sticky buns and jelly doughnuts. 1000 North Bay Avenue, Beach Haven; 609-492-4966.

Alison Nelson’s Chocolate Bar
A one-year-old café selling brownies, chocolate bars (filled with pretzels, raspberry jam, Key lime, bananas) — and iced hot chocolate. 220 Centre Street, Beach Haven, 609-492-2577; chocolatebarnyc.com.

Douglass Fudge

COMMENT:
Douglass Fudge, in Wildwood, N.J., on the boardwalk has some of the best candy at the shore. A 90 year old family owned establishment, it makes everything with the purist product ingredients...sugar, cream, etc., with no skimping on the family restaurants. I love their sponge, and their caramels. Don't forget to mention this in another article on sweets, because these people have the best candy anywhere! It's on the Boardwalk at Wildwood Ave. and they are online as wellBarbara

COMMENT:
I love Douglass' Fudge in Wildwood, New Jersey. We have been going there for years ~ I especially love their Coconut Fudge! I have never been able to find it anywhere else. Their creamy mints are good also.
