The Betrayal

For 30 years, as Vince Fumo ruled Philadelphia politics, we knew how he operated: You were either on his side or he’d try to destroy you. The behind-the-scenes run-up to his federal trial this month reveals something new: His family works in exactly the same way

IT WAS MARCH 2003, and Vince Fumo should have been happy. He was Vince Fumo, after all, and his life had been an epic, unlikely success. When he was a kid, no one would have singled him out for greatness. He was runty and meek. He got beat up a lot. And yet his transformation from wedgie magnet to the Vince of Darkness, the most feared Democratic politician in the state, was the stuff of local legend and long magazine profiles. He was rich. He was powerful. He owned a 99.9-acre farm where he planned to raise alpacas, whose meat, he had heard, was very profitable.

And now, for the first time, it looked like Vince Fumo might soon be blessed with grandkids. Vince had three children. His 34-year-old son, Vincent E. Fumo II — named after his grandfather — and his eldest daughter, Nicole, 30, were products of his first marriage; Allie, 13, was a product of his second. Vincent II wasn’t married, but Nicole was preparing to tie the knot. She was a lithe brunette — no trace of the jowly, canine features that make Vince look like a bobblehead doll of himself. Her groom was an ex-football player at Penn State and a lawyer who had worked for Vince for almost five years. Christian Marrone was six-foot-three and 270 pounds. He had thick black eyebrows and slicked-back Pat Riley-type hair that was starting to thin a little on top. He was loud, ambitious and ballsy — ballsy enough, anyway, to have walked into Vince’s office to ask Vince for his daughter’s hand. The day it happened, Vince sent an e-mail to Nicole’s mother, Susan Meo:
Christian was just here and has asked for my permission to ask Nicole to marry him. He is already broke from buying her an engagement ring!  … Well, we’ll see where this chapter in life now takes us! I hope to a happier place!
More than once, Vince had told Christian that he considered him to be like a son. And now Christian was marrying his daughter, making it official. There was only one problem, from Vince Fumo’s point of view: He wasn’t invited to the wedding.

Vince has dominated Philadelphia politics for so long that we’ve come to believe we know him. We know his motivational slogan, We get shit done, and his personal credo, Balls and brains, loyalty and leverage, which he has mused may be the title of his memoirs. We know about the power, the money, the pork, and the Tony Soprano-like way he polarizes the political world into two warring camps: people who are with Vince Fumo, and people who need to be driven into the dirt. What we didn’t know, until now — the eve of the second trial in Vince’s career (a 1980 mail-fraud conviction was overturned on appeal a year later) — is that Vince’s personal life operates in much the same way. The Fumos are living a multi-generational tragedy. It’s operatic and sad and often absurdly petty — which is to say, it’s family stuff. Complicated.

Fumo Article

COMMENT:
It is a shame that you used NONE of the 3 + days of interviews that we did. You slanted the story just like the Fumo people wanted you to. The trial WILL TELL WHO THE RAT REALLY WAS and then you can leave my brother alone. Shitty reporting at its best!

I personally do not know any of these people, But in just reading this article I am SHOCKED to read what families could do to each other. How dare that young woman tell her father who he could invite to her wedding, that for him to decide, did someone say Paris Hilton....How about Britney that would be more like it. A real pack of spoiled brats. Nicole Get a Life............ One of your own

Your article made me read the actual indictment. It starts way back in 1991 yet you say his son-in-law worked there starting in 1997. So by my math he was in high school at the time this started. How can you, or anyone else solely blame him? Didn't his "Carl Rove" (Howard Cain) just turn on him and agree to testify? Your left out 6 years?? Who told the Feds that span of info.?? Shame on you for not pointing this out!

Good to see Philly Mag nail it. Fumo's got his demons, but Marrone is just flat out disloyal, turning his back on everyone who ever did anything for him, looking for the next big thing to move on to while he climbs over the people who gave him a hand up. Everyone was thrilled when he left Montgomery County. Here's to hoping he never comes back. Good riddance to that disloyal rat.

This is the problem with blogs. So many cowards. I only knew chris as a loyal, intelligent, hard working, co-worker. He never tried many cases but he was/is going places. To get out of that hole on Tasker St. is a triumph! Jealously is a tough thing for some people!

I am sure we only know a tenth of the real story. Chris did a great job in Montco. and it was always known he was going places. He broke out of a horror story before coming to the burbs. The people in Fumo's office were horrible situation in Philadelphia. The Fumo people are simply jealous of him breaking away and being successful on his own. They should try it!

If people knew what Fumo really did to you and nicole, there would be outrage! we know you and we support you dude! i laughed reading a couple of the stupid blogs above, if you wanted to be a senator, you would have been already!

COMMENT:
Its laughable the desperate attempt by some Fumocrat's posting here (Minnie and Bruce is that you) and there failed attempt to place blame on someone else for massive problems. To send DiCicco and Kenney as your attackers is sad and says alot about Fumo and his team. DiCicco himself a rat - a former R - went to the feds to get plenty of dems in the past. Kenney owes his entire life to Fumo. More shocking is that these are our elected officials? They are going after Marrone for having the courage to tell the truth - shouldn't they be doing the same. Instead of condeming Fumo's activies they embrace it. They attack others for doing their duty as a citizen - what an example these councilman set. By attacking Marrone they are suggesting that their loyalty to Fumo trumps us and ones duty to tell the truth. These are our elected officials?? This is disgraceful. Thank you to people like Marrone, who have the courage to step forward.

you mean chris marone his version of the truth. does anyone live in philadelphia? I do and our city has come alive due to Senator Fumo, Diciccio and jim kenny. but that does not count, the jealousy is not where you think it is, Senator Fumo did his job. and did it well thank you for 30 years of quality service.
Yes - the truth

COMMENT:
Yes - I do live in Philadelphia and it is completely maddening the state of our elected officials. Our councilman are attacking a citizen for doing his duty yet they shirk their own responsibility. What these people may have done is irrelevant now. Your arugment that we should look at the good and ignore the obvious bad behavior is the reason why we have such a horrible government that is plagued by indictment after indictment. This is not isolated to these fools, look at Castor - a DA that is supposed to protect our rights tramples on one of his own by admitting to firing for political reasons - that is an astonishing admission. We also have bonusgate. Maybe this type of government serves you well, but I expect more. Again, anyone who has the courage to stand up to these princple-less pols deserves admiration and the support of the public. Team Fumo needs to worry not about Marrone, but their freedom.
The Real Christian Marrone

COMMENT:
Christian Marrone was a thug. Plain and simple. When he came to Whitemarsh Township he trampled over people, lied, sneaked, cajoled, walked away from a $10,000 bill that he run up in his wife's losing campaign. He was a mess. He stabbed people in the back with unusual ease. My only regret is that he could only be run out of town once and I can't stand Vince Fumo. But he didn't try to ruin my town, Marrone did.
Chris - WE LOVE YOU! YOU THE MAN!
Posted by Anonymous | Aug. 20, 2008 at 1:04 PM
COMMENT:
I laughed reading the above comment. Your town? You own Whitemarsh? Sounds like the goofball we all know and hate! Anyway, Chris you were always a gentleman, professional, and sincere, in all of our dealings with you both in and outside of the city. You always have had strong ambition and that is the way it should stay. People in glass houses should not throw stones.I hope Jason Fagone has the guts to do a follow-up piece. (which we all doubt) It is a shame these folks have to hide behind blaming you for their charges. And by the way, you were not run out of town...you got a huge job at the Pentagon and left town. Strange comments from strange people!
This quote says it all...

Fagone's quote "Team Vince hopes that focusing attention on what it considers Christian Marrone’s act of betrayal will obscure the question of Vince’s own betrayal — of his office, his constituents and his oath." is 100% dead accurate!
Tragic
Posted by Anonymous | Aug. 20, 2008 at 1:19 PM
COMMENT:
It is truly tragic to see a daughter and her husband betray their father. Marrone's actions speak of pure opportunism. He works for Fumo, is treated like a son, marries his daughter and then splits for the suburbs with newly discovered Republican ideals. Marrone has no credibility. It seems like more than mere coincidence that a key witness for the prosecution now holds a plumb position in Washington, D.C.
What?

COMMENT:
What is tragic is your lack of understanding. The fact that anyone with half a brain, would take this story as everything from a to z IS tragic. The only coincidence is that you know how to walk and talk at the same time!

It's quite sad that everyone focuses on the soap opera aspect of this issue while failing to consider the obvious facts. Vince Fumo has brought innumerable amounts of money, jobs, resources, and opportunity to this city. Christina Marrone has done nothing more memorable than hone his skills at opportunism and familial betrayal and sit his (fat) a** in the stinking pile that is GW Bush's legacy. All of you thinking otherwise will soon learn what it's like to not have Vince Fumo in Harrisburg.

Never said ignoring bad behavior. But not to recognize the facts that are elected officials have done good for philadelphia would only mean that we are staying focused on the negative. We are not a perfect city we have are share of problems especially the crime, children are being shot in the streets, why is so much attention being focused on senator fumo,he has done his job the only way he new how, is it because he is a man of great power and people resent him for being so,as a community we need to take some responsibility for our own actions. This story is about a family in crisis. I as one feel sorry for the termoil that they will be going thru in the next month. This is the ony family that they will ever have.
Shame on you

If anyone here actually knew the family they would know the truth for themselves and not subscribe to the ideals and so called "truths" of this article. Both Nicole and her husband as well as Vince Fumo are kind and caring people. YOU are the ones who should be ashamed, this magazine as well. Tearing a family apart in this time of obvious turmoil is just plain cruel and who here has the right to comment on the families issues. Non of this is for outsiders to speculate. Let a judge decide if Fumo is guilty, and let the prosecution use Christian Marrones words as they may. Remember he's under oath and can only answer truthfully therefore don't attack him and his family for following the law. We don't know the kind of pressures he is under. At the same time it is not our place to pass judgment on Fumo, we elected judges and created the court system for that. I say leave the family be. You vultures (reporters) get a life and find another family to destroy because this family doesn't need a

The number of anonymous tough guys posting here is laughable… What ever happened to loyalty… to honor? I have been a Fumo family friend for 10 plus years and I can tell you, there isn’t a more stand up guy in Philadelphia than Vince Fumo. It’s so easy to pile on once someone has taken a fall. Yet damn near impossible to find true friends when you really need them. Other elected officials could only hope to do a tenth of what Vince has done for this city. Respect isn’t given, it’s earned and Vincent has earned Philly’s respect. Christian, look up loyalty in the dictionary… read it until you understand it, though I doubt you ever will. People call them rats because they will do anything to survive. -Goodfellas

Tyler - now who is the "tough guy" quoting Goodfellas? Grow up. The indictment spans a time when Chris was in high school. Know the facts before you speak. So as a Fumo family friend, I am sure you are required to "pile on" because after all, the Senator is blameless and ALL attention should be deflected. On and on it goes! Same stuff different day! See you at the trial tough guy!

How is it that someone who has a history of disloyalty gets a job dealing with National Security Issues at the Pentagon? Who was the person that hired him and signed off on his security clearance and why isn't Mr. Marrone facing an indictment along with his father-in-law? Seems to me that Mr. Marrone can't have it both ways. I guess Birds of a feather????

For all the people praising Marrone and putting Fumo down: Think what you may about Fumo but don't praise Marrone for doing such a great job as far as standing up and supporting the public. Think about all of the articles about this issue that are currently out. Marrone worked for Fumo and said that he spent most of his time at tending to Fumo's house (basically doing personal work for him). Did he have a hard time accepting a paycheck?? Did he know what was going on from the beginning? Should they be attacking his career/life/sanity? So yes, Marrone clearly betrayed Fumo after working for him, gaining power and eventually marrying his daughter! I don't know where you people are from but I would never lay my father out to dry over guests at my wedding. RIDICULOUS! Now we really have something to worry about because NO ONE will bring to Philadelphia what the Senator has!

Fumo took him under his wing, gave him off for the whole summer with pay to study for the Bar Exam by the way he embezzled the money for that Bar Exam from Citizens Alliance I wonder what the Pentagon has to say about that. The reason he went to the FEDS was revenge he lost a power struggle at Tasker Street. You see he wanted to run Citizens Alliance and lost! He only married Nicole to get power. His lawyer is Nicole mother's new husband! I hope someday his daughters marry a man just like him now that would be justice!
