The Best B&B Getaway: The Woolverton Inn

Stockton, NJ

By Timothy Haas

It’s not just the understated English decorative touches that so enhance the experience here, or the owners’ English springer, Tom, who romps around the property, or the almost impossibly high four-poster king bed that, once you’ve made the climb, you sprawl upon in relief. It’s not even the two-person Jacuzzi, complete with pastoral mural, behind the sliding barn door. It is, in the end, the absolute perfection of the plush windowseat overlooking the Woolverton’s happy flock of sheep that banishes all recollection of the trials of daily life, and leaves you enveloped in a halcyon dreamworld. To be sure, there’s no shortage of pursuits nearby — biking, antiquing, wine-tasting, two fine restaurants a few minutes down the road. But for us, it was just a quick stroll on Woolverton’s grounds and a futile attempt to lure one of the sheep to us for
petting before we dove right back into the dream.
