Taste Daily: Ice Cream, Hold the Cream

I didn’t believe Essene’s manager when he told me that the gelato-like Banana Whip they serve was literally just bananas. It’s hard to imagine that anything with such a silky texture and sweet taste doesn’t have any added cream or sugar.

The Whip’s secret is all in production: Organic bananas are frozen, then run through a Champion juicer with the pulp filter removed, producing a soft-servelike product that's pale in color, high in vitamins and pure in flavor. That is, if you really, really, really like bananas. Try using it to trick Junior into thinking he’s eating ice cream — and when he’s not looking, add some of Essene’s toppings, such as granola or coconut, to yours.

What we paid: $2.50 for a 4-oz. serving
