A&E: Not a Drop to Drink

A local walk and film screening highlight the plight of millions without access to clean water

By Jihan Thompson

We hardly think twice before gulping down our Fiji water as we work toward those ever-unattainable recommended eight glasses a day. But not every thirst happens to be quenched so easily and affordably. World Water Day, started as an initiative passed by the United Nations in 1992, raises awareness about the more than 1 billion people worldwide who don't have access to clean, safe drinking water. To support this effort you can catch an informative film screening and discussion about the current crisis. But if you'd rather be more on the move for this cause, join the Walk for Water from Love Park to World Café Live, meant to simulate the average three-mile trek people in water-stressed countries have to travel to get to water for their family. Not mobile? Take part in the virtual walk and your name will appear on the water jug of an actual walker at the event.

March 22nd: Screening at The Bridge Cinema, 4019 Walnut Street, 7 p.m. March 24th: Walk for Water from Love Park to World Café Live, 11:30 a.m. Both events are free; worldwaterday.net.
