If Seinfeld and Arrested Development gave birth to a love child, it would be It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Now in its third season, the FX sitcom, created by Philly’s Rob McElhenney, centers on the absurd shenanigans (They find a dumpster baby! They scam welfare! They try out for the Eagles!) of four friends and Frank (a lovably bizarre Danny DeVito), the estranged father of two of them. Sharply written, Sunny nods both visually and verbally to Philly, often filming in and around the city, even dropping in random Main Line references. What makes the show a must-see isn’t its zany plots so much as the comic synergy of the cast — it feels more like a home movie of a dysfunctional family than lowbrow Two and a Half Men-style pap. A
