Jerry Blavat Finds the Fountain of Youth

I learn that when one of the Geator’s middle-aged fans approaches him in a restaurant, he stands up, rears back like one of the tinier dinosaurs in Jurassic Park, snaps his fingers five or six times — SNAP SNAP SNAP SNAP SNAP — and says, “Oh, I love ya, you’re the BEST!”

I learn that the Geator is not a “deejay.” He’s a “performer,” like his dear departed friend Sammy Davis Jr., who came up to the Geator when the Geator was just 14, dancing on Bob Horn’s Bandstand, and told him, “Hey, you’re like a white me.” I hear this story three times by the end of the night.

Hey, you’re like a white me.

I keep drinking, keep learning. I learn that there is only one kind of music, good music, and that the music of today is not this kind of music. I learn that kids today are nonetheless attracted to the “honesty” of the good music (the Geator calls it, simply, “The Music”), as delivered by the Geator: “Young people are intrigued by the energies that the Geator puts forth.” I learn that if you love what you do, you cannot get old. (“Charlie Chaplin was 90 years old and still zooming broads.”) And the Geator absolutely loves what he does, which is to narrate and interpret The Music for his thousands of superloyal fans — who, contrary to the wayward beliefs of the Mafia-busting New Jersey State Commission of Investigation, have always been the sole source of the Geator’s power and influence. The Geator says that if anyone ever prevented him from playing The Music the way he wants to play it, like certain station managers have tried to do in the past, the Geator would be like the Native American Indians, who used to “have the freedom to run, until we saddled them … until we put them on reservations.” Says the Geator, “I am a Native American going back to the very beginning, when they had the freedom to roam and hunt when they were hungry, to live off the land and be a happy people.”

I learn that the Geator is 100 percent not kidding about this.

Most importantly, I learn that “as long as there’s an audience out there, young or old, who wants to hear music as honest as it is, any time period, I’ll be around. Until the good guy upstairs says, okay, I need you up here with Sammy.”

An excellent article on the Geater... as someone who was never allow into 'his tribe' (he's STILL deep into Native Americans :) I nonetheless am glad to see he continues to do very well, adjusting without changing. God Bless Him and his remaining family in South Philly.

Seems a bit disrespectful to merely say "indicted lawyer Ron White." Interesting article otherwise
Size doesn't matter at 60!!

COMMENT:
Would have loved the article until you had to focus on the size of his male body parts! What does that have to do with his music fans?? Those of us in our 50's & 60's could care less. Real men do not have to brag about it!

Just wanted to say "Thank You" for the great article on Blavat. I was one of his crew from the early 60's following him to every hop. i'd love to see him again.I'm from central Jersey now and getting by but my memories are so vivid from my Philly days that I'm always looking to see if he will come up this far North.I will always be a "Yon Teenager" at heart and I hope that the younger generation will finally pick up on the only "REAL" D.J. in America.I am probably the guy who asked him not to play Beatle music..lol His truth and passion are to is credit...Thanks Jerry...Your friend..Discaphonic Ralph

Being an avid Jerry Blavat fan, I have attended many of his dance parties throughout PA and NJ the past 45 years and I am absolutely amazed how the "music" makes me feel so good and takes me back to the nostalgic times. In fact, while in college, I listened to him broadcasting the oldies from a small NJ radio station around 1965 and immediately ran downtown Philadelphia to purchase his "For Dancers Only" record album and listened to Amazons and Coyotes over and over again. It helped me learn the Bristol Stomp.Tell Jerry to stay in shape so we all have him around for much longer because he keeps us young with the "music". Thanks!

I am so happy to hear the Geator is doing well. I grew up in PA and have fond memories of listening to his music from Steel Pier, etc. In my mind he is always young, full of energy, and rockin to the music. I can't imagine what Philadelphia would be like without him.

I was in catholic high school, Jerry came to our town near Reading Pa.for a big dance and picked us to be on The Discophonic Scene. Our parents drove us once a week to City Line Ave in Philly. This was a big deal then..saw Little Richard, Dusty Springfield, Bunny Sigler..I wasn't a good looker but a good dancer and had my pick of dates to be on that show. How exciting..and nostalgic. There was a vinyl LP cut from that show. It'll surface one day, I am sure...

As a kid from S.Jersey, the Geators' hops and T.V. show was a big and important part of my life. Important because I could relate so easily with Jerry in terms of his ryhthem and soul in his choice of music. At times I play the 'Dancers Only' and there we are ,stomping,boo-ga-looing,line dancing, slopping and doing the cha-cha 'til we thought are asses would fall off.I just gotta say THANKS,sincerly.Sorry for chewin'gum on Discoph.Scene and Jerrys Place, where picked-up the nickname 'bubbles'.Ocean City was great and so was Wagner,Mephree,Maple Shade and of course,Riviera Ballroom. Keep rockin'....truly,Mikey.
