The Mix: Branching Out

Urban Outfitters, Inc.’s transformation of 118-year-old J. Franklin Styer Nurseries into a brand-new home and garden concept store, Terrain at Styer’s, is nothing short of ­breathtaking. On the 11-acre Delaware County property: the country’s oldest mushroom barn (now a potting shed), an artisanal shelter store, a chic hardware and organic seed shop, a full-on ­nursery peppered with vintage tools and water sculptures, a full-service cafe, and, after all that, landscape design ­services.

The Greenhouse
At the entrance to the greenhouse, in front of 300-year-old Indian doors, a mossy tree table displays a vintage English terrarium ($2,295), artichoke planters (from $24), miniature succulent gardens (from $15) and books. Behind the table and through those doors: endless orchids, ferns and exotic tropicals.

The Cafe
The cafe’s salvaged doors, living wall, bright metal chairs and flowerpot-topped tables set an intimate, ­garden-party mood for long lunches of Kennett Square mushroom soup and flank steak sandwiches served with polenta fries. (Breakfast is La Colombe coffee and oatmeal sesame bread, for toasting and topping with homemade olive oil butter and strawberry basil jam.)

Outdoor Furnishings
Terrain’s buying team searched the world for sturdy, sleek and unexpectedly chic patio furniture. This find: a teak-and-metal Italian table that expands to accommodate 18 people, and folding side chairs ($6,500 for the table, $495 per chair).

Home Goods
The largest of the outbuildings houses bright lacquer-finished pottery, vintage metal furniture, heirloom-tomato-scented candles, sculptural wooden lamps, and handmade stoneware, including this fairly traded, artisan-made cup and saucer from South Africa ($52).
