Homegrown: Building Beauty

By Bridget Salmons

James and Karen Moustafellos may design and handcraft their simple but striking jewelry in a Philadelphia studio, but their sculptural wears evoke the aesthetic of European design. The husband-and-wife duo are trained architects, but three years ago, after James enrolled in a jewelry and metalsmithing class at UArts, they launched Elements and Alloys, their own luxury jewelry line. “Architects can spend years designing one building,” says Karen, “so we were excited by the idea of making multiples.” EnA manipulates high-quality metal — gold, sterling silver and stainless steel — to create simple, graphic silhouettes like this 18K-gold link necklace (price upon request) and gold-and-silver lariat ($525), as well as bracelets, earrings and cuff links. Capture that European elegance without a transatlantic flight: EnA’s geometric pieces share space with other cutting-edge jewelry designs from Munich and Rome at Lisa M. Reisman’s Rittenhouse Gallery. Elementsandalloys.com. Lisa M. Reisman’s et Cie Gallery, 1714 Rittenhouse Square, 215-735-2781, lisart.com.
