Centers of Excellence: Trauma

When the SUV carrying New Jersey Governor Corzine smashed into a guardrail a year ago crushing 15 bones and pushing his femur through his pant leg, the trauma unit at Cooper Hospital saved his life. Trauma units are super-duper emergency rooms where helicopters rush those who’ve been shot through the heart, battered into a coma or broken in pieces. The minute a copter touches down on the hospital roof, a team of trauma specialists springs into action: anesthetists, surgeons, x-ray techs, E.R. physicians, trauma nurses, respiratory therapists, all trained to handle disasters. In what may be a sad testament to our city’s violence, we have seven Level 1 Trauma centers in Philadelphia; all have met the most stringent standards of 24/7 care for dire medical and surgical emergencies.
