Given the political power of the unions, though, I’m not holding my breath. As of early August, $2.5 billion in business had been booked at the expanded Center for next year and beyond; $850 million more in business is a possibility. If, that is, those conventions choose Philadelphia instead of Atlanta or Chicago or some other city where they don’t have to put up with our unions.
It’s always interesting, how character is revealed when times are tough. I believe union mouthpiece John Dougherty cares only about squeezing as many dollars out of conventioneers as possible. If that means, in the future, that the Convention Center has trouble attracting business — hey, is the future of the city my problem?
