Beth Van Why, DesignPhiladelphia and the University of the Arts

Van Why is exactly the type of person DesignPhiladelphia was intended to attract. She moved here in 2004 for graduate school at the University of the Arts. Her class was one of those exhibiting work at the first DesignPhiladelphia, which introduced her to local designers, architects and planners. “I thought I would do grad school and leave,” says Van Why. “But then I got to know Philly and its neighborhoods and the people who work here. It’s a great place to be doing what I do.”

Best known for: The hidden hand behind every aspect of DesignPhiladelphia.

What she’s doing this year: Coordinating an exhibit and critique by students in the UArts industrial design department, and being, well, everywhere.
