EDITORIAL STAFF

Larry Platt, Editor
A respected national journalist and author, Platt took the helm as Editor-in-Chief of Philadelphia magazine in September 2002. Previously Editor-at-Large, Platt, a journalism graduate from Utica College and a Master of English graduate from New York University, has been affiliated with Philadelphia magazine for ten years, writing features on sports, politics, media and business. His work has appeared in GQ , the New York Times Magazine , Men's Journal , Playboy and Salon.com, among other publications. In 1997, as a senior writer, he left to write his first book, Keepin' It Real: A Turbulent Season at the Crossroads with the NBA (Avon Books). In May, 2002, Temple University Press published New Jack Jocks: Rebels, Race and the American Athlete, an anthology of Platt's national sports pieces over the years. Most recently, Platt is the author of Only the Strong Survive: The Odyssey of Allen Iverson (Regan Books, October, 2002). ("Iverson's past has been strip-mined by many," writes Sports Illustrated 's Gary Smith. "Platt has gone back with a hand shovel and sifter and found what everyone missed.") Platt, a native Philadelphian, is a frequent commentator on NPR and has appeared on numerous television shows, including Nightline, ESPN Outside the Lines, and HBO Real Sports. Platt is 40 and lives in Ardmore, PA.
Tom McGrath, Executive Editor
McGrath is former executive editor of Men's Health magazine and former editor of Atlantic City magazine. McGrath, a graduate of University of Scranton, is the author of MTV: The Making of A Revolution (Running Press) , a business/cultural history of the cable network, and his writing has been published in George , Glamour , Child , Success , P.O.V. , and other national publications. He has won several writing/reporting awards from the Society of Professional Journalists, and he has appeared on NPR, the Fox News Channel, MSNBC, the BBC and other TV and radio outlets.
Robert Huber, Features Editor
Huber, a Penn State University graduate, has been with Philadelphia since 1991 as a copy editor, contributor and now editor, feature writer, and Larry Platt's whipping boy. His profile of Joe DiMaggio Jr. was in Best American Sports Writing 2000, and his articles, essays, and short stories have been published in Esquire , GQ , Details , South Carolina Review and many other publications. He's working on a novel about the dubious state of contemporary romance.
Amy Donohue Korman, Senior Editor
Donohue Korman, who writes features and lifestyle stories, is a Philadelphia native. She is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Skidmore College, and has worked at Philadelphia magazine for more than a decade; she was also an editor at Men's Health magazine. Her work has appeared in Men's Health , Time Out New York , Good Housekeeping and Cosmopolitan .
Sandy Hingston, Senior Editor
Hingston, a native of Bucks County, first joined the magazine in 1990. She graduated summa cum laude from Duke University. Her bi-monthly column on raising her two children, "Loco Parentis," won the gold award for regular column from the City and Regional Magazine Association this year; it joins silver and bronze awards she has previously won from the CRMA. She has also won awards for her work from the Society of Professional Journalists and the Association for Women in Communications. She is the author of 18 historical romance novels, including The Suitor and The Affair .
April White, Food Editor
White, a graduate of LaSalle University, regularly reports on food, drink and Philadelphia's restaurant scene for the magazine; edited Philadelphia Magazine's Ultimate Restaurant Guide (to be published October 2004); and authored The Essential Guide to Eating and Drinking . She has also written for the Philadelphia Inquirer , the Legal Intelligencer , the National Law Journal and the Lowell Sun .
Carol Saline, Writer at Large
Saline is a journalist, broadcaster and the author of six books. Her most popular, Sisters , written in collaboration with photographer Sharon J. Wohlmuth, spent 63 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and sold over one million copies. It was followed by Mothers & Daughters , which immediately soared to number one on every national best-seller list: New York Times , USA Today , Publisher's Weekly and The Wall Street Journal . Their third bestseller, Best Friends , completed this influential relationship trilogy. Since 1974 she has been a senior writer at Philadelphia magazine where she currently writes a monthly health column. Her work at Philadelphia has garnered several dozen journalism awards including the National Magazine Award, three Clarions for print feature writing from Women in Communications, the Charles Stuart Mott and The International Reading Association Awards for educational writing, and The Health Journalism Award from the American Society of Chiropractors.
Richard Rys , Senior Writer
Rys, who covers media, music, sports and personality profiles, holds a master's degree in magazine journalism from Syracuse University's S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. Born in Philadelphia and raised in South Jersey, he has been recognized by the Society of Professional Journalists and was named a finalist for the 2003 Livingston Awards, which recognizes journalists under the age of 35. His work has also appeared in Men's Health , Men's Journal , Best Life and Men's Fitness , among other publications.
Sabrina Rubin Erdely, Writer at Large
Rubin Erdely has been with Philadelphia since graduating from the University of Pennsylvania in 1994. She's a contributing editor at Self , and her work has appeared in GQ , The New Yorker , Mother Jones and Reader's Digest , among other publications. She loves writing about crime and health; her work has been featured in Best American Crime Writing . Erdely has earned over a dozen awards for her feature writing and investigative reporting, including a National Magazine Award nomination.
Matthew Teague, Senior Writer
Teague is a native of Mississippi, and has written for GQ, Esquire, Details, Outside, Men's Journal and other magazines. He lives in Narberth with his wife, Nicole, and their daughter Molly.
Andrew Zahn, Associate Art Director
Andy Zahn graduated from Tyler School of Art in 2000 with a MFA degree. After spending a year working as an art director in New York, Zahn returned to Philadelphia as the Assistant Art Director and in 2003 was promoted to Associate Art Director.
Roxanne Patel Shepelavy, Writer at Large
Patel Shepelavy graduated from the University of Pennsylvania where she studied English literature but spent her time toiling at The Daily Pennsylvanian , the school's student newspaper. After college, she was a newspaper reporter for the Press Democrat in Sonoma County, north of San Francisco. At Philly Mag for eight years, she has served as online editor (developing the mag's first web presence) and managing editor, before becoming a full-time writer. She has also written for Self , Glamour and Good Housekeeping magazines.
Sasha Issenberg, Writer at Large
Issenberg, a Swarthmore College graduate, has written for Philadelphia magazine since 2001. He was previously a contributing editor at George. He has written on politics, business and culture for Inc. , The Washington Monthly , Salon , Mother Jones and Mademoiselle.
Jason Fagone, Contributing Writer
Fagone wrote for Cincinnati magazine before joining the staff of Philadelphia magazine. He was named a "writer on the rise" by the Columbia Journalism Review in 2002. A graduate of Penn State University, University Park, and a New England native, Fagone writes profiles of Philadelphia figures.
Maureen Tkacik, Writer at Large
Maureen Tkacik began her career in journalism at Philadelphia magazine as a summer intern in 1997, and by October 2003 she had come full circle. Most recently Tkacik spent two and a half years covering marketing and youth culture in the Wall Street Journal 's Los Angeles bureau as well as spending two years in Hong Kong working at Time magazine's international editions. A native of Alexandria, Virginia, her first "real job" was as a general assignment reporter at the Philadelphia Daily News . In 2002 and 2003 she was named to the TJFR "30 Under 30" list of notable young business journalists. Her work has also appeared in the New York Times , the New York Observer , the Philadelphia Independent and Men's Health Weight Loss . She lives in Center City.
David Senior, Assistant Art Director
Senior is a graduate of Tyler School of Art, where he majored in photography and design. He previously designed album artwork for independent artists and record labels. He is currently playing bass in a band that likes to turn the volume up much louder than it should be, just because it makes it that much better. One day he will make a movie, or write a book, whichever comes first. Senior also despises fashion trends.
Victor Fiorillo, Research Editor
A native of the area, Fiorillo joined the Philadelphia magazine staff in 2001. In addition to overseeing all aspects of research and fact-checking, Fiorillo writes a bimonthly food column. He was the recipient of the first-place Keystone Press award for investigative journalism in 2001.
Zoey Sless-Kitain, Photo Editor/Social Editor
A Philly native and graduate of Tyler School of Art, Sless-Kitain has held an array of positions in various fields including theater management, public relations, event coordination and photography. Her photography has most recently appeared in two books, The Insider's Guide to Cape May and Philadelphia magazine's Ultimate Restaurant Guide.
