Three Tasting Menus And A Snowy Start To The Year Of The Horse


Happy Chinese New Year, everyone. And welcome to the Year of the Horse. Despite the snow, the ice, the cold and everything else, we’ve got three Philly restaurants running Year of the Horse tasting menus this week–Sampan, Matyson and Meritage. Check out the details after the jump.

And, as mentioned above, Sampan is also doing a menu–$55 per person, served family-style, with a minimum of two guests and reservations strongly recommended. He’s doing four courses, with multiple dishes per course. Sampan’s menu will run from February 4th to 14th, and while there’s no official menu yet, it looks like the spread will including Vietnamese egg roll with glass noodles, wood ear mushroom and nouc cham;  Lunar New Year Dumpling with pork, shrimp and ginger;  baby octopus satay with pickled cauliflower, sesame oil and herbs;  pickled lotus salad with banana blossom, pork belly and crispy shallots;  tea-smoked chicken with Sichuan cucumbers, bibb lettuce and hoisin;  steamed striped bass with scallion-ginger oil, charred leek broth and winter melon;  long noodles with king trumpet mushrooms, yu choy and oyster sauce;  steamed custard with ginger, caramel and vanilla;  and mochi ice cream with green tea, lemon and honey.
