This Sunday: Typhoon Haiyan Benefit At Tela’s Market

In a time of year when we tend to be even more gluttonous than usual, nurturing our generous, empathetic impulses seems not only prudent, but even virtuous. Of course, the creative among us have figured out how to combine gluttony with generosity…

To wit, in support of relief efforts in the Philippines in the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan, Chad Williams, of the newly-opened Tela’s Market in Fairmount, is teaming up with chef Jasper Alivia (of Cuba Libre), and Poi Dog Philly to host a benefit dinner this Sunday at Tela’s for the American Red Cross . The suggested donation is $55 per person and includes four courses of Filipino favorites with some Philadelphia twists.

Poi Dog’s contributions, for example, will be a Philadelphia Lumpia with Long Hot Sauce (long fried spring rolls stuffed with sharp provolone, ribeye and caramelized onions) and a version of the pineapple bibingka (coconut rice cake) that you may have seen on their truck. Chef Williams will offer kare kare, a Filipino peanut stew featuring Wyebrook Farm oxtails, and Chef Alivia is putting up lechon kawali, roasted pork with gravy.

Beer, wine and cocktails will be included and they are not to be missed. Jonny Medlinsky (Khyber Pass Pub) and Catherine Manning (Franklin Mortgage & Investment) are teaming up on cocktails and perhaps even a firkin brewed specifically for the event.

Reservations are required. Save your seat by emailing: varah.lynette@gmail.com
